The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is an industry standard that allows for a more secure setup and easier management of your server. With a UEFI Class 2 implementation, HPE ProLiant Gen10 servers may switch between UEFI Mode (the default) and Legacy BIOS Mode.
The system's health is constantly being monitored by the Trusted Platform Module (TPM), a dedicated processor. A TPM is a non-active component that requires updates and can't restrict anything other than its own memory access. It also allows for the generation and manipulation of RSA public-private key pairs, among other cryptographic processes.
A code running on the central processing unit (CPU) performs the first verification of signatures; this code may be intercepted and altered. HPE's Silcon Root of Trust verifies the silicon for the unchangeable fingerprint that confirms all firmware code as authentic and uncompromised whenever a server is powered on and the iLO system comes to life. Since more than a million pieces of firmware code are run before the system software starts up, it is essential to make sure that all vital firmware on servers is virus-free.
All systems with an iLO5 chip come with a Silicon Root of Trust as part of the iLO5 Standard. This consists of Synergy Compute Modules, C-Class Blades, ML/DL, Apollo, and ML/DL. Both the HPE Cloudline and HPE Microserver lack silicon root of trust since they do not use an iLO5 silicon chip. The HP ProLiant Gen9, Gen8, and Gen7 servers don't support this technology, so they can't be updated to support the silicon root of trust.
Before the iLO 5 firmware code is retrieved and run, it is verified by the silicon.
