Dell PowerEdge R720: Specs and Rack Compatibility

Anatomy of the chassis and its attributes

R720 back view

Processors

Dell PowerEdge R720 and R720xd servers are equipped with the Intel processor E5-2600 v2 product portfolio, which provides excellent productivity, value, and power efficiency. The E5-2600 v2 central processing units (CPUs) have up to 12 cores and 30MB of cache, which may result in performance gains of up to 40% when opposed to their predecessors.   • Intel Data Direct I/O (DDIO) lets I/O traffic go directly to the processor cache instead of the main system memory, which may drastically cut latency and keep memory in a low-power condition.
  • When it comes to large-number computations, which are crucial to many technological, financial, and scientific computing challenges, Intel Advanced Vector Extensions may provide up to twice as many operations per clock cycle by increasing the length of registers.

Compatibility with Graphics Processing Units 

The R720 is equipped with GPU technology, which may speed up the operation of several programmes. These programmes include VDI and HPC implementations. Neither built-in nor add-on GPUs may be used on the R720xd. 

Aid for GPUs on the inside

The R720 can accommodate up to four 150W full-length, single-wide GPUs or two 300W, double-wide GPUs. Each GPU has its own cooling system and may use up to 6GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory. The graphics processing units (GPUs) are connected to the PCIe x16 2.0 ports found on riser 2 and, potentially, riser 3. For more than two GPUs, a system needs the optional riser 3 with a single x16 slot.

Due to the high power requirements of GPUs, each GPU might have two power plugs. Putting in a GPU internally requires the GPU enabling kit. This bundle includes the necessary power cables and other components to allow for GPU operation in the R720 chassis.

Constraints posed by internal CPU cooling

When one or more graphics processing units (GPUs) are placed in a Raspberry Pi Model R720, the system inlet temperature must not exceed 30 degrees Celsius to prevent overheating. This is below the bare minimum temperature requirement of 35 degrees Celsius set by most environmental standards.
