Overload management

The R720 and R720xd's adaptable I/O and storage features allow them to keep up with the digital age's data explosion. With the R720, you can add as many as sixteen internal hard drives to your storage, and you can even use hot-plug, front-access Up to four Express Flash PCIe solid-state drives provide in-box storage tiering for improved performance. Using up to twenty-six internal hot-plug hard drives, the PowerEdge R720xd provides lightning-fast access to and processing of massive data sets. The R720xd is an excellent choice for enterprises of any size that need to expand their storage capabilities as their needs grow.

Make adjustments to the network's underlying architecture

If your application requires more I/O performance, the R720 and R720xd may be configured to provide it. The Select Network Adapter from Dell gives you the freedom to pick the ideal network fabric without sacrificing a PCI slot. On 10GbE connections, bandwidth can be shared and managed based on your speed, technology, vendor, and other preferences.

Boost your use of virtualization

The R720 and R720xd's huge memory footprint will allow you to extend your virtual environment, hence increasing the application capacity of your data center. Select a top-tier hypervisor and make use of our system management features to keep track of all your assets, both real and imagined. Maximizing the availability of your virtual machines may also be aided by using redundant failsafe hypervisors. With the Dell OpenManageTM Integration Suite for Microsoft System Center and VMware vCenter for ESXi, it's easy to manage complex virtual environments.

Management of complex systems, made easy without sacrifice

A component of Dell's OpenManage systems management package, Integrated Remote Controller 7 (iDRAC7) with Lifecycle Controller is a remote access controller. This in-built capability allows IT administrators to control Dell servers in a variety of environments, including in-band, out-of-band, locally, and remotely, and with or without the use of a systems management software agent.

OpenManage iDRAC with Lifetime Controller interfaces to and integrates with the industry's best third-party systems management management services, allowing customers to maintain a consistent leadership structure and maximize the value of their existing systems management investment. Installing and upgrading Dell PowerEdge servers, as well as monitoring and managing them, is simplified with OpenManage.

Anatomy of the chassis and its attributes

The redesigned chassis architecture of the Dell PowerEdge R720 and R720xd allows for more DIMMs, PCIe slots, and hard drives than their preceding servers. The next sections show the systems from the outside and the inside and detail the characteristics of the chassis.

The R720 can accommodate up to 16 2.5-inch or 8 3.5-inch front-accessible, hot-plug hard drives, and the front bezel is easily removed for maintenance. An LCD control panel that you can interact with, two USB ports, a video port, and a vFlash card slot make up the rest of the front panel.

Internal chassis views

Both the R720 and the R720xd have chassis designs that provide quick access to internal components and adequate airflow for cooling. These manual details the numerous features and elements that may be used with the R720 and R720xd, including the fact that they can accommodate up to 24 DIMMs, 2 CPUs, and hot-plug duplicate fans.

Short-Cut Finder of Useful Materials

The Quick Resource Locator (QRL), a model-specific Quick Response (QR) code, may be found on the Dell PowerEdge 12th generation server and is a handy addition.

Processors

Dell PowerEdge R720 and R720xd servers are equipped with the Intel processor E5-2600 v2 product portfolio, which provides excellent productivity, value, and power efficiency. The E5-2600 v2 central processing units (CPUs) have up to 12 cores and 30MB of cache, which may result in performance gains of up to 40% when opposed to their predecessors. If you're trying to maximize productivity while minimizing expense and environmental effect, an E5-2600 v2 CPU might be a good choice.

Performance characteristics of the processor

Powerful new features and enhancements to many existing capabilities distinguish the Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product range.

  • Support for DDR3 1866MT/s memory ensures speedier system connectivity across the board Dell's exclusive Fault Resilient Memory technology creates a safe memory area for a hypervisor without using up half of the system's RAM
  • When combined with the Failsafe Virtualization provided by the E5-2600 v2 processors, this delivers unrivalled security for virtual machines.
  • It's been estimated that Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 can provide twice as much acceleration as the previous generation's turbo technology.
  • Intel Data Direct I/O (DDIO) lets I/O traffic go directly to the processor cache instead of the main system memory, which may drastically cut latency and keep memory in a low-power condition.
  • When it comes to large-number computations, which are crucial to many technological, financial, and scientific computing challenges, Intel Advanced Vector Extensions may provide up to twice as many operations per clock cycle by increasing the length of registers.

Compatibility with Graphics Processing Units

The R720 is equipped with GPU technology, which may speed up the operation of several programmes. These programmes include VDI and HPC implementations. Neither built-in nor add-on GPUs may be used on the R720xd.

Aid for GPUs on the inside

The R720 can accommodate up to four 150W full-length, single-wide GPUs or two 300W, double-wide GPUs. Each GPU has its own cooling system and may use up to 6GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory. The graphics processing units (GPUs) are connected to the PCIe x16 2.0 ports found on riser 2 and, potentially, riser 3. For more than two GPUs, a system needs the optional riser 3 with a single x16 slot.

Due to the high power requirements of GPUs, each GPU might have two power plugs. Putting in a GPU internally requires the GPU enabling kit. This bundle includes the necessary power cables and other components to allow for GPU operation in the R720 chassis.

Constraints posed by internal CPU cooling

When one or more graphics processing units (GPUs) are placed in a Raspberry Pi Model R720, the system inlet temperature must not exceed 30 degrees Celsius to prevent overheating. This is below the bare minimum temperature requirement of 35 degrees Celsius set by most environmental standards.
